Death In June - Black Angel-Live! [Leprosy Discs - 2008]

After the excellent acoustic based new album The Rule Of Thirds, Black Angel–live sees Death In June presenting a  great snappy, no nonsense and highly enjoyable live acoustic set recording in Esplanade Hotel in Melbourne, Australia in May, 2000- this was one of the first stripped acoustic show- released here for the first time.

The set features just Douglas P and John Murphy and is mainly just acoustic guitar, Douglas P's melodic 60’s tinged vocals, minimal samples and backing vocals. Taking in 12 songs and lasting 33 minutes, track wise we have the follow- seven tracks from 1996 Something Is Coming album which are; Runes And Men, But What Ends When The Symbols Shatter ,Ku Ku Ku  with a great pig sample on the start of the track, Giddy Giddy Carousel, Kameradschaft and Fall Apart The Golden Wedding Of Sorrow. From 1987 seminal Brown Book we have three tracks Hail! The White Grain , Runes And Men and To Drown A Rose. From 1985’s  Nada! we have She said destroy and from 1995’s Rose Clouds Of Holocaust we have Omen-Filled Season. The recording is nice and clean sounding through out, with a nice balance between vocals, acoustic guitar, ltd samples and back vocals. There’s no in-between song banter, the pair just fire out one great rendition after another with just a thank you and good bye at the end of set.

The cd comes in a nice full four panel digit-pak with gold embossing on and some great tongue in cheek pictures of Douglas P in full camouflage get up and army hat with a collection of rope like threads coving his face with the angel of the north statue in the background. All in all a great recorded and packaged live set that’s executed perfectly both vocal and instrumental .
