 Meringue - Sex & Hair [Self released - 2001]This is one of the most diverse cd's I heard in quite a while. Meringue is a very talented Dutch band who mix different kinds of music to a succesful blend of rock, death metal, funk, electro, comedy, ska, pop and much more. Yes, that's quite some influences, and the band manage quite well in mixing these different genres into six great songs (with one intro and a 'hidden' track).One of the influences of Meringue is Mr Bungle's first album. I must state that they do not rip-off the band, but there are some clear influences on Sex & Hair. Mostly the saxophone and metal parts remind me of Mr Bungle's masterpiece. A unique thing about Meringue is how they also incorporate cabaret and comedy in the music. The lyrics are quite bizarre too, about German nudists, who are camping in the forest, when suddenly some of them are starting to disappear.... Hmmm, where did we hear about this before? I find Meringue one of the most talented Dutch bands currently. And I'm glad I'm not alone, since the band already got their video clip played on a regional TV Channel. Is this the first step to stardom? Well, let's hope so, since Meringue has the talent to do so. Sex & Hair is a great introduction to the band, while not yet perfect, it showcases the talents of the band with great success.    Niels van Rongen
