Vomit Orchestra - Bridges Burnt [Autum Wind Productions - 2007]Vomit Orchestra is a project that is at odds with ones perception of them. Firstly their name suggest some sort of tacky Carcass clone. Secondly their puzzling artwork which is made up of old soft-core female pictures, out of focus matter and slight occultic learning’s- leaves you unshaw quite what to expect. what you find musically with-in is just over 70 minutes of atmospheric, downtrodden, often sinister and vaguely nostalgic guitar scapes. With here & there layers of other droning instrumentation, odd drives into noise based matter and the subtle weaving of cleverly placed samples. This as the liner notes relates is more of a collection of tracks than a defined concept running all the way through them. Which at times can become a little jarring as new moods, emotional, or scenes- are suddenly forced on you, but it gives you a good feeling of the projects ability to change tack, with only a few tracks here that really hum of filler. Some of the most effective moments in my eyes would be: Dying with it’s slow revolving and eerier yet somehow comforting guitar harmonics, layered with static play. It brings to mind the tunnel over to the spirit world unfolding before you, your dead loved ones calling you in. Another would be the title tracks life weary melodic guitar unwind that’s joined by organ hovering. It brings to mind a more morose less country based version of Earth's recent material.Feeling like your following a funereal procession through rubbish strewn and people-less city streets. An interesting and varied collection of haunted sound scenes that have certainly trigged my interesting to track down more of this projects work. Roger Batty
