V/a - Noise.IL [Topheth Prophet - 2006]This collects together tracks from the often overlooked Israeli noise/ experimental scene. Going from long dialogue sample led tracks with noise manipulation, to ethnic chanting that slowly melts into noise hazy, to seething mulit- layered sound overloads. Not surprisingly most of it is very angry, but it’s also the tracks hover into dread filled caustic ambient drifts with religious/political leanings. Using dialogue samples from media broadcast mainly in English so that point travel father. On offer are nine tracks in all lasting between 3 to 10 minutes, all having a wonderful heat hazed and violent edge to them, whining melodies are looped out before been molested by banks of static and discordant almost metallic chugs walk their world weary path. A few stand out moments come in the form of Aboolele VS Gaop’s He will be blessed, which joins and eerier looped electronic voice repeating the mantra “I believe in the creator and his name will be blessed…” with weeping and waling like melodic carnival run down elements, low growls of static and often aggravated rants over the top, making a wonderful oppressive and creepy track. I’ll Be the Weininger of my Time by Drone Leanon which starts off with old Arabic like chanting, before building up a throb of noise over the top, that easyers in an eerier eastern distorted & looped melody toped off with some distorted ranting. Balancing nicely the feeling of dread and violence. Like most compilations of scenes this is a bit hit and miss, but that’s to be expected, but there’s enough rewarding moments to make it worthwhile. An effective primmer for the noise productions of Israel. Roger Batty
