Various Artists - Tomorrow’s Fashions [Ace Records - 2024]Tomorrow’s Fashions is a twenty-eight-track compilation focusing on the electronica side of the library music genre. Coming as either a CD or double vinyl release- the compilation is a wonderful varied sonic trip back to the early 70s to late 80s, and the world of Library music with a distinct electronic edge. I’m reviewing the CD version of the release. It comes presented with a glossy twenty-page inlay booklet, which features detailed texts about the artists featured/ the compilation itself, as well as a good selection of colour cover artwork/ artists photos/ vinyl labels.
The compilation is well balanced in its different types/ pace of tracks- all making for a most varied & engaging collection. In the first half, we move from the sad tolling keys/ warbling ‘n’ wavering ambience of “Rippling Reeds”. Onto the bright jiving of Peter Reno's “Spaghetti Junction”, with its manically clip-clopping percussion, and mix of warm/ funk bass organ/ synth tones. Though to the pulsing synthesizer weaves meet vivid electronic blips, hisses, and woosh of Astral Sounds “Interface”.
In the second half, we go from rapid bass plod, happy-go-lucky keyboard flow, and steady snapping beats of Warren Bennetts’ “Planned Production”. Onto the warbling-to-choppy synths lines, shifting bass pulse, and slight Asian-sounding tones of “Eagle” by Soul City Orchestra. Through to the warm ambient glide ‘n’ dart of Brian Bennett’s “Earth Born”. Onto bight, rising vibe-like keyboard runs meet wavering synth bass groove of Astral Sounds' “Topaz”.
Tomorrow’s Fashions is a wonderfully curated and well-put-together compilation- and if you have any interest in retro electronica, or the library music genre in general- it is most certainly a must!. To buy directly, as either a CD or double vinyl release drop in here. Roger Batty
