Sergey Pakhomov - Dead Form [Self release - 2023]Dead Form is a recent long-form example of morphing textured noise/ walled noise craft from Russia’s Sergey Pakhomov. The digital release features a single 90-minute track- which over its length features three distinct phases, as well as moments of subtle adjustment. It must be a year or so since I’ve last heard anything from Sergey or his projects such as Train Cemetery etc. And as we’ve come to expect from this Russian noisemaker the whole thing is skilfully created/ executed. Dead Form comes as a self-released digital release, and it can be found here.
So we open with a slowly fading meeting of grey drone & ANW- with a muffled bass judder/ drone- which feels decidedly organic in its attack. By the thirty-one-minute mark, a thinner chopping/ slightly sputtering tone has been added into the mix- this feels rather uncertain in its feel, and at points, it feels like it could completely cut out- yet it never does. The next distinct shift/ addition occurs at the hour mark where a more ragged static-focused rumble is added to the base of the track.
Dead Form is certainly one of the more dense & pressing ambient-focused releases I’ve heard from Mr Pakhomov- who quite often utilises detailed/ complex texturing in his work. So, do be aware of that when going into the release- but personally, I found it an engaging one-hour & thirty-minute ride. It’s great to have this Russian waller still creating work, and if you enjoy the more grey-droning & pressing side of the genre this will most certainly appeal. Roger Batty
