Performative Cruelty - Enough New Ghosts [Gates Of Hypnos - 2022]Enough New Ghosts is a three-track walled noise release from USA’s Performative Cruelty. It’s a digital affair, with the tracks being of the shorter variety- with a focus on crunch-bound & texturally crafted wall matter. Performative Cruelty has been active since 2018, with eleven digital releases to its name. I have been aware of the name for a little while, though I believe this is my first taster/review of the project's work- and on the whole, this is a good selection of shorter wall matter.
Cover artwork wise we have a purple-tinged old picture of what looks like a Japanese person dressed up as a ghost or demon, which of course fits the release's title. The release appears on Poland’s Gates Of Hypnos- and can be found here
The three tracks featured have runtimes between nine and fifteen minutes. We open with “Untitled 239” here we find an agitated blend of knock ‘n’ judder, which is sewn through with small rattling grit ‘n’ pop. Next is “Untitled 230b” which focuses on a more rapid hissing jitter tone, which is underfed by a messily battering blend of constantly descending knock ‘n’ crunch.
Finally, we have “Untitled 238” which is the longer of the three tracks. This a slightly more pared-back, though still fairly rapid wall. It’s built around a basic cluttering selection of crunching tones, which are weaved with smaller micro pop ‘n’ grit tones.
Enough New Ghosts is a rewarding three-track release- and I do hope that Performative Cruelty can further develop the more texturally rewarding element of its sound. As there certainly is more than a bit of promise present within these tracks. Roger Batty
