Koobaatoo Asparagus - Gimp & Burnette [HNW Netlabel - 2020]Gimp & Burnett takes in a bass rumble and static cluttering bound slice of long-form walled noise from this long-running and prolific based California project. This digital-only release appears on the London based HNW Netlabel-which is one of the more respected web based labels in the scene. Koobaatoo Asparagus has been active since 2009- with Discogs listing 330 releases to date, though I’m sure they’ve released a few more than that on small digital labels, or as self-releases. Behind the project is one Michael Scott- and I’m ashamed to say, I’ve been aware of the projects name for many years- but this is my first taster on its work, and I must say we have a nicely entrancing slice of wall-craft here- which may/ or may not be slowly grinding down into its self.
The single forty-minute track on offer here is built a constantly reeling and slightly ribbed-to-beaded bass rumble- this is locked a fixed mesh of nicely crisp and hacking static. Scott feeds these two elements together in a simplistic-yet- well-balanced manner, with the mix between two textures been even and level. The bass tone has a bluntly churning quality to it, which feels both muddy and pressing, while the static tones nice bounce and snap at each other, creating almost a revibrating cage of cluttering crispness. The ‘wall’ textures feel like they are steadily slowing and grinding into each other, and this effect is most entrancing - though I suspect it’s all just a trick of the wall. All in all, I was most taken/ impressed with the ‘wall’, and I’d certainly say if you after thick and encasing wall-craft, that blend of bass and static in an appealing/ trance-inducing manner- you need to check this out!.
So after hearing the Koobaatoo Asparagus name so many times- it’s great to finally check out some of the projects work, and I certainly say I’ll be checking out more- as Gimp & Burnett, is a most consistent slice of long-form walled noise. To check out this release head to just here. Roger Batty
