Power Monster - Bourgeois Aspirations [Ominous Recordings - 2020]Bourgeois Aspirations severs up ten slices of relatively short, dense, and creative harsh noise which has both a collargey & playful vibe about it. The release appeared in April of this year on respected Stockholm based noise label Ominous Recordings- it came in the form of a C30 & digital download- sadly the tapes all gone now, but it’s still worth well checking out as it’s certainly one of the more creative & fairly accessible noise releases I’ve heard this year, also I'd say this would be a great entry level release for anyone getting into the noise genre. The black shelled cassette comes presented in a monochrome cover- this features on it’s front a layered up picture featuring a female figure holds two small knives & the projects fairly metal underground looking logo, on top of this/ over the is a block overlaid $ signs. The tape features five-track per side of tape, and each is around the two and a half minute mark- so if you don’t get on with one track, another is along fairly soon.
Power Monster is all the work of Providence, RI based Alexandra Pharmakidis- who before forming this project was involved with the likes of Sex Bruises & Mucophagia. As far as I can gather Power Monster has been active since 2010, putting out around thirteen releases- though that's going on its Discogs listing, which more often than not is accurate when it comes to noise artists
Kicking side A off we have is “Say Yes”- here we find an almost groove bound blend of purring static bass, constantly forking ‘n’ baying junk loops, and crunchy static bounce. By track three we've moved on to the more looser & leisurely -yet- no less detailed “Spoiled, Stuck up” with is a mixture of lightly cluttering & spurting texturing, lulling bang 'n' crash junk tones, with latter this wavering almost vocal moan adding almost harmonic qualities to the track. Side A is topped off with the rather wonderfully titled “Wandering Beekeeper” which ties hazy melted musak, tight jitter beads of static, and sudden metal like slicing's.
Flipping over to the second side we have the amassed noise joy of “Empty Fortress”- which is built around a ramshackle mix of sudden ripping & baying noise tones, thinner static grain pop, and jaunting-yet-melted dramatic-to-romantic music snippets. After this, we have the cluttering & shrill harsh noise mayhem of “Get The Guilltone” with its dense waves of bending 'n' baying tonal pile-up, ringing sweeps & whistle, and off-hand crackle. The release is topped off with the constant grain pelting-meets- almost sourly harmonic high pitched noise sweeping of “Reactionary”.
Hands down Bourgeois Aspirations is a damn great noise release- and I reckon most fans of any of noises sub-genres will get something from this release. Equally, as I mentioned at the start of my review this would also be a great entry release into the world of noise too- as the sound pallet is varied, shifting, and playful. Roger Batty
