Prostitutes Of The 19th Century - The Dawn Of Sleaze [Geraeuschmanufaktur - 2017]The Dawn Of Sleaze is the most recent slice of sleazed & creative walled noise from this Danish project. It comes in the form of C30, which appeared on German noise & experimental ambient label Geraeuschmanufaktur. The cassette its self-features a blue shell and comes with in a monochrome cover that takes in a selection of Victorian porn- fitting the projects name, and it's themes. The release came in an edition of thirty-five copies, and as of writing the label seemingly still has stock.
The release features in all four tracks, with two on each side of the tape. Each of these last between seven- to-nearing eight minutes. Like the other releases I’ve heard from this project the sound here is very musty & grimy, yet detailed & cleverly layered in its presentation. So there’s a real feeling of perverse sonic mastery here, which of course is perfect for the projects subject matter.
First, out of the gate we have the title track. This brings together a constantly churning, yet slightly uneven roller texture & buried knocking/ clicking tone. These central elements are surrounded by a selection of shifting sub-tones, which take in: slowed & eerier metallic forks, snapping ‘n’ spitting smaller grains, and circular yet trundling machine clutter.
Next, on side A, we have the track "Domestic Servant". After a sudden & brief rush of muffled grain haze, we move into a hellishly dense cacophony of pummelling lows & mids, cluttering & coarse junk reverberations, and tunneling blunt drone currents. It literally feels like you been fed into the guts antiquated & seriously malfunctioning machine, that’s slowly ripping its self apart from inside.
Over onto side B, and first up we have "Victorian Sex Offender". This is built around a blend of crude ‘n’ blunt low-end chopping ‘n’ churning textures, knocking ‘n’ jittering rod bangs, and this extremely buried but sinister very church organ purr ‘n' dart. As the track progresses you get this unsettling winsome moans & bays appearing at the edges of the truly dense & suffocating mass. The track feels like your in some dingy gas lit room, and your head keeps been held under water in a huge wrought Iron bathtub, as all manner of depravities are going on in the half light around you. It’s a great, great bit of extremely sleazed-yet-highly creative wall-making, and it’s my favorite moment here.
Last up we have the track “Past And Present”. This ‘wall’ brings together a rough-shod & head clearing selection of tumbling ‘n’ battering descents, shifting banks of cluttering metallic tone, and skittering-to-grinding grain roasts. This 'wall' feels a little bit cleaner & less hazed than the other three tracks here, but it’s still very detailed & creative in it’s careering yet skillful guided attack.
With The Dawn Of Sleaze, this project once again proves that they are one of the more distinctive sounding & talented walled noise projects presently working with-in the scene. Simply put it’s another masterful excise overloaded audio sleaze, which alive with creative & worthy detail. Roger Batty
