Portrait Of A Slasher - Friday The 13th [Bad Rip Series/Ink Runs Recordings - 2014]

Portrait Of A Slasher is one of the more recent projects of long-term West Virginia based HNW maker J. Cadle (Foul, ….Massacre, & Oasis Of Fear). All of this projects releases are themed around classic & cult horror movies, and this CDR release is the first physical release from the project after a few download only albums.

As it’s title suggests this release is themed around the first Friday The 13th movie from 1980….I wont go onto detailing the plot etc of this movie here, because really if your reading this review & M[m], I’d hope you more than familiar  with this influential & early slasher movie.

The CDR features just a single track that comes in at the 40.10 mark. The track opens with a brief sample of the movies  instantly recognisable soundtrack with it’s use of chopping voice moftit & slicing string tension. Then with-in less than 30 seconds we’re into the ‘wall’, and this is a rapid & face ripping mixture of low-to-mid ranged billowing roasting, juddering ‘n’ jittering thinner static texturing swirls, chugging sweeps, and the odd subtle higher pitched noise tones- with the whole thing been underfed  by some very slight hints of wavering harmonics & atmospheric texturing.  The whole track is very dense, thick & full in it’s feel, yet there is a fair bit of shift with-in the layers of the ‘wall’ it's self….so it’s most certainly ‘wall’ like in it presentation, but on a layer level there’s a nice amount of shifting textural detail if you pay attention…or of course you can just  let the whole thing roast ‘n’ searing over you instead.

I guess sound wise this isn’t a huge departure from Mr Candle’s most known project Foul, but I’d say there is a bit more layer movement here compared with his past work.  All told this is another rewarding release from Mr Candle, and if you’re into fairly layer active & subtle detailed walled noise with a horror movie theme this is well worth a look.
