Scant - Only In Dreams Do I Know Im Dead [Breaching Static - 2014]

Scant is a Richmond, VA. project that flits between Harsh noise, dense electro drone, walled-noise, and noise ambient- behind the project is Matt Boettke(also of  Sex Complex,Widow's Bath & Heartstrung). For this CDR release we get a just over half-an-hour journey into grim & bleak ambience/ANW, which has a very deep aquatic quality to it.

This release appears on Breaching Static- which is the HNW/ noise/ experimental label of Iowa based Alex Nowacki(of Boar, I Watched You Die, ect). The unlabeled CDR comes in the labels house style black paper slip sleeve & stuck-on photo copied artwork…the artwork for this release takes in either a murky picture of a decaying wall, or hazed picture of a water clustered  slate.

The single self-titled track is built around a very slowly moving & murky rumbling/ droning texture, which has a very watery/aquatic feel to it. The track very much brings to mind a slow/solemn descent down ‘n’ down through a mass of murky grey water- I guess it could either be the sea, or a deep lake/ lock…but which ever it's a truly hopeless, shapeless & eternal bleak watery void.  Through-out the track remains pretty much locked in the same continual descending rumble/drone, and there are never any harmonic edges or textural shapes present here. Toward the tracks last quarter it possible gets denser, more pressing, and urgent in its feel, but of course that could be just down to my imagination, and ones brain trying to see shape & movement in the pressing bleak-ness of it all.

As stark & bleak ambient/ANW goes this certainly mangers to send you to a very grim & shapeless place. And even through there’s no major movement( or any at tall?!) I found the whole thing quite appealing in it’s pressing grimness. So if you’re a fan of total hopeless drone craft this is worth tracking down
