Ghost Time - Self Titled [Hinterzimmer - 2012]

The Ghost Time project falls somewhere between thick ‘n’ dark ambience, doom jazz, and drifting dark sound tracking. This recent collaborative project brings together three well respected names in the atmospheric/experimental scenes- we have highly respected & prolific percussionist Z’ev, Scottish jazz fusion drummer &  percussionist Ken Hyder, and English pocket trumpeter Andy Knight.

This self titled début release brings together four ten minute to near on fifteen minute tracks of brooding & densely chilling sound craft.  The projects name  is extremely apt as the tracks here are often very blurred, ghostly, creepy & seemingly out of time, yet the sound here is often dense & thick too.

To create this dense yet creepily shifting sound Z'EV plays a mixture of Alto Rolmos, Baritone Rolmos, Stainless Discs & Bass Lines. And Hyder a mixture of Voice, Snare Drum, Cymbals, Saintless Discs & Tenor Rolmos. With Knight  just playing he’s pocket trumpet to finish the dark heady mixture.

Each of the four tracks here has fairly similar feel, vibe & structure to them with Z'EV & Hyder creating this thick drifting fog of slowed ‘n’ slurred percussive matter and clunking ambience. Then Knight adds on top his smoky & doomed pocket trumpet playing.

All four tracks here are both captivating & creepily soothing in their unfolds, and you really do find your mind drifting off to some strange & shapeless grey other world where ghostly shapes meld and sway with abandoned buildings & people-less barren landscapes.  All told it’s  a most rewarding & satisfying collaboration, lets hope there is more from the Ghost Time project in the near future
