Netherworld - Kall - The Abyss Where Dreams Fall [Mondes Elliptiques - 2008]

Netherworld is a project by Italian sound artist Allesandro Tedeschi. Kall: The Abyss Where Dreams Fall is a four part suite in the vein of what might be described as dark ambient in the classic sense. It retains a bit of Tedeschi's proclivity toward chilly arctic atmospheres for which he is known, giving it a little something to distinguish it from such influences as Lustmord and SPK, among others. It is a fairly dark album, and it has its moments. The use of light and shade is probably the best component to Kall. On occasion deep bass tones provide an underpinning for the sharp electronic tones. Also, cavernous reverb is used to add dramatic effect to the clanging, ghostly sounds.

The album includes long passages of beat-less sounds, which remind of composed vintage avant garde, along the lines of Stockhausen. These sections are juxtaposed by heavy industrialized beats and swirling gongs or cymbals. Presumably, there is also found sound in there somewhere. Tedeschi explains on his website that Netherworld is a project for which to explore nature through the use of everyday environmental sounds. Whether true or not to this release, it's hard to identify found sounds as such, and as a result it's not an especially organic album. That, coupled with the fact that the music doesn't lead the listener anywhere in particular. If you listen to it in bits and pieces, it's certainly intriguing, but approached as a whole, the drifting quality merely becomes a bit aimless.

Chalk it up as an admirable, yet flawed effort. On a side note, the package for this release is classy. The disc is presented on a textured vellum cardstock sleeve, with appropriate minimalist cover art. It's limited to 441 copies.
