Guapo - Elixirs [Neurot Recordings - 2008]

Elixirs is an exquisitely dark and heady mix of instrumental rock, jazz, shadowy classical tones, world music edger’s, prog and soundtrack tones. Though you can define their influencers this comes across as very darkly fresh and exciting mix of sounds that they make totally their own, having heard mentions of Guapo many times it’s nice to hear the band and for once find their better than expected.

Opening up the album we have the shimmer dark and slightly eastern tinged build and dropping away tones of  Jewelled Turtle that brings together fender Rhodes keyboard grim melodic climbs mixed with sawing autoharp panic, bass rumbles and often ritual tinged percussion and latter on some tolling guitar work. It feels like a soundtrack for a pitched black detective meets eastern demonic possession movie, with great building and shifting instrumental textures and some surprising changers in pace. Later on with Twisted Stems: The Selenotrope we find jazzy very cymbal based percussion meeting doomy almost discordant piano hits, and darkened funked bass/ guitar tones. All swarmed by blackened soulful female vocalising  & clear metallic like drum runs showing up here and there bringing a real feel of tensioned desent into a nightmare world. Really where every you drop down here you'll find something darkly harmonic and intelligently put together  that's full of surprising and clever sonic turns. The albums also really nicely and sleekly illustrated with black and white artwork booklet which really adds an extra layer of class and dark mystery to the whole album.

A heady, blacked and immaculately played album  that I can see going down well with those who enjoy shifting and clever soundtrack music, as well as fans of darker jazzy and instrmental bands/ projects.
