Gluttony - Collapse of the Roman Republic . Liber Primus [Cyolops Records - 2008]This has been one of the strangest concept albums both in execution and theme. The concept is about the collapse of the Roman Republic, which is told in deep mock demon vocals over a mix of synthzised repetitive jazz and guitar synth noderling. You think you’ve heard everything then a bizarre cookie like this pops up and really screws with your head. Though for the first half of the record it’s intriguing, odd and very bizarre, sadly at the half way point it becomes rather clear that the sound here is just too limited to keep you interested through out the 70 minutes playing time. A lot of the musical backing is very similar and there’s little or no change in pace or sonic ups and downs that a tale of the fall of a great and mighty empire should have. There a hell of a lot of text croaked out too, I’m guessing a few 1000 words worth but again there little or no change in the demon/ growl like delivery. A curious and bizarre yet ultimately flawed concept album.one for those hunting the next height of oddness, or a quirky and bizarre novelty item for surreal dinner parties Roger Batty
