Gulskul - Gulskul [Kovorox Sound - 2025]Gulskul is the self-titled debut album of this three-piece project, who create a warped, electro-buzzing, noise-edged mix of lo-fi wave & shouty/baying female-led experimental post-punk. The project brings together Gothenburg, Sweden-based Sara Ohm( solo work,Videoiid, Dødsførak) - vocals/ guitars, Sarah Glass( solo & The Fnords)- vocals/ noise, and Lea Cummings- drums(Kylie Minoise, Official Music Team, etc).
The nine-track album comes in the form of a CDR, which can be purchased directly from here. It features basic hand-drawn/ written cover artwork, mixing black pen with a red backdrop.
It’s a decidedly pained and crude album, which features very off-the-cuff and noise-scarred sound. We move from the sinisterly baying feed-back purr, wiry guitar fuzzed, muffled female shouts, and bounding percussion of “Girl Detective” which sounds like a wound-down female-fronted take of The Fall, at their more blunt.
Onto the steady tick-toking rhythm, malevolent guitar simmer, and muffled feminine shouting ranting of “Mental". Though to wonky/ wavering taut blues tinged twang, bashing cymbal-based percussion, and wailing chanting vocals of “Glaishouse”.
As a self-debut album, Gulskul rather crudely drags itself along- I do enjoy the extreme lo-fi, at points texturally interesting slog of the whole thing. Though it would be nice to have just a little more shape/ clarity here and there. For those who enjoy extremely messy/ seriously low-fi guitar slug. Roger Batty
