Christening Black Death With The Devourm - S/T [WitchHouse Records - 2006]

Christening Black Death With The Devourment Of The Worm is a bit of a mouthful of a project name. So what does such a name have to offer?, well they submerge the listener in 40 minutes of maggot crawling dead for a few weeks, Subterranean drones. A ghastly flesh ripping mix of black ambience, noise of soured horrific grimness, with some slight nods towards metallic tendencies.

Born from the same black and blood soak earth as the  gut wrenching horror that is Coffinbirth's  home namely  Witchhouse Records.  But Where Coffinbirth seems more intoned with real life horror and insanity- Christening…. Go more towards  filmatic flesh ripping and cellar door creaking horror, that isn’t real but will still give you a hell of a fright. One of the most effective moments here is The Merciless  bell toll through the city of the pit, which creepily joins together the low down groaning and growl of freshly raised undead with throbing pitch bassy black ambience and all manner of other Subterranean horror dread. All in a rather effective manner, hell you even think you can smell them at some points, almost see  lumps falling from their decaying flesh. Some of this album does come across as a little naive in the sound use and building of atmosphere, but for the most part it’s an enjoyable grim soaked ride.

Witchhouse records really seeming to be carving out their own distinctive identity as a label that falls disturbingly between dark ambience, noise and audio shock-matics. Really a label worth a look if you enjoy creepy maggot crawl trips to the edge of audio sanity. To find out more dip your hand in this Cadaver's sticky chest cavity.
