Sergey Pakhomov - Backward Movement [Self release - 2024]Backward Movement is a new release from the Russian wall-noise maker Sergey Pakhomov. It’s a single forty-minute track which highlights Pakhomov's skill for creating detailed, and subtle shifting textured noise matter. The album is a self-released digital affair. For the cover artwork, we have a monochrome picture of a tower block filmed from a fairly high-up position. The release can be found here.
It must be around a year or so since I last reviewed any of Sergey Pakhomov's work. During the mid to late 2010, he was decidedly prolific releasing things under project banners such as Train Cemetery, Bitum, & Kara. Though in recent times he's released spits & spats of titles
The track opens with a fading-in/ locked juddering static tone. By the second minute, this is added to by a rapidly darting water-like tone, as we can also make out a selection of micro twitches ‘n’ chops, and flag-like buffering adding to the build weave of textured noise. By around the twelve-minute mark, I’m making out a reverbed knock/click. At the fifteen-minute mark, we find sudden off-pattern buffeting swipes, and wind-like drags, by the end of the track we have the addition of detailed metal knocks, hits, and ticks.
Backward Movement is another highly skilled example of textured wall craft from Pakhomov, and it’s great to have him back in the scene, let's hope there’s more work in the pipeline from him. Roger Batty
