Painjerk Wracked and Ruined & The Toucha - Dots Kinematics for Electronics & Chamber Orchestr [Conradsound - 2024]" /> |
Long-running Japanese noise act Painjerk has been known to destroy speakers and eardrums with his amazing and abrasive harsh noise performances and recordings. However, not content to rest on his laurels, Kohei Gomi also takes a more refined approach to his craft and has embarked on a number of interesting collaborations throughout the years. Revisiting his composition "Dots Kinematics," Kohei teamed up with the Norwegian chamber orchestra The Touchables. This collaboration put forth an engaging, experimental take on the original, giving us this new album. Sprawling over thirty-two minutes, "Dots Kinematics" pairs electronics with traditional chamber instruments in a battle to redefine how one sees both noise and classical music. While not as upfront with the amalgamation as something like Noiseman433's Autumn: Four Seasons Part I, the two acts choose their approaches carefully, putting thought and emphasis on each note, tone, blast, and crash. Constructing an original piece that pushes the boundaries of tempo, pacing, and texture, Dots Kinematics showcases how well two very different worlds can work together to create beauty through chaos. Unlike the traditional chaos of harsh noise, the listener is given a refined piece, with eleven artists working as a unit to challenge one's expected views of both noise and chamber music. Restraint is the key word for this work, as both pieces keep their explosiveness reined in to allow each element to speak, move, grow, and tell its tale. Outside of the individual instrumentation, their collaboration together creates intriguing new tones and textures, which is often thickened up with electronic noise behind it.
Noise is often mixed in with other genres, most notably metal, but this collaboration of noise and chamber music is an even more perfect fit. Avant-garde flourishes make both genres exciting, so this dual attack has been dangling in plain sight, just waiting for the right adventurers to bring it to light. Dots Kinematics for Electronics & Chamber Orchestra Version II is a wonderful and inspiring look at how sound becomes art, either from the ground up or through deconstruction (so to speak).
