Magnus Skavhaug Nergaard - Hibernacle [Motvind Records - 2023]

Norwegian musician and producer, Magnus Nergaard, once again teams up with Motvind Records, although this time in a different mode. Having recorded/mixed seven of the label's releases, Nergaard now has some of his own material released, this spring's Hibernacle. Based around improvisations utilizing various sources (a broken Korg X911, a fiddle, and SP 404, among others), Nergaard's release is a tough one to pin down, but definitely captures the fun and improvisational moments that he was looking for, and many of the songs' beautiful vibes warrant repeated listens.

Spread over eight varied compositions, Hibernacle embraces the full artistic expression of not only Magnus Nergaard, but also a few guest musicians. Opening with the propulsive and fairly dark "Antenna," the listener is brought into a world where anything can happen. Utilizing signals and static, Nergaard gives the listener a thought provoking exploration into what is transmitted to us invisibly through the air. Hibernacle then takes a turn into a more traditional sound and song structure, with a tropical feeling groove on "TV-ornament." Then, all of a sudden, "All of a Sudden" brings it back to textures, tones, and noise, though this time a bit more grimly. Dark and intriguing, this is a gem for sure. For those missing the bucolic side of life, Nergaard brings you home with "Flutter at the Farmhouse"; a delightfully light jaunt complete with animal sounds made from instrument squeals and creaks. This country stroll vibe continues with "Vehicles" before moving into the buzzing and throbbing title track, "Hibernacle." Nergaard mixes up tones and flavors well on this album, and the darker tracks manage to blend with the lighter tracks very well. Closing out with "Ordinary Blurry" and "Dreams," Hibernacle wraps up its dualistic approach to sound in very stylish fashion.

Growing more like a barnacle, Hibernacle lays it all out for the listener, but its varied approaches leave the result up to many listens. Improving with each experience, Hibernacle plays well in all weather and all mindsets, possibly even helping those in need of uplift. More than just the sum of its parts, Nergaard's release is a very engaging listen and worthy of many spins. For more info
