Whore's Breath - Ventilation Cycle [Stemms Audio - 2023]Ventilation Cycle is three track walled noise release from Cincinnati, Ohio's Whore’s Breath. Each track hits around the ten-to-eleven-minute mark, and each is a fairly rapidly weaved example of crispy ‘n’ crunchy wall texturing. The release is a digital self-release on Stemms Audio, which is the project's own label. Artwork wise we get a rather murky/ unclear monochrome photo- that could either be a plastic vent, or maybe a widow frame- but I’m guessing it’s the latter due to the release's title. The release can be found here.
The Whore’s Breath project has been active now since 2021. With to date around twenty releases to its name. It’s largely consistent in quality venture, and I must say I’ve found with recent releases it just seems to be getting better and better- so let’s hope this trend carries on, as it certainly has with the three tracks on Ventilation Cycle.
Each of the tracks here is untitled. We open with "Untitled 1"- which slides in just under the ten-and-a-half mark. The tracks a nicely urgent & busy start to proceedings- as we find a dense & rapid mesh of constantly descending hack ‘n’ crackle, jittering rattle, and crisp-like snapping’s. It’s a great ‘wall’ to really get yourself entranced/ lost in- as your mind follows first one pattern after another.
Next, we have "Untitled 2"- this runs at just shy of the ten minutes and twenty-five-second mark. And once again it’s a very densely weaved & frankly manic example of wall-making. The mesh brings together a muffled drag/ squiggle- with constantly pelting snap, rattle, pop, and cluttering smaller toned details. This track is rather dizzying with its feel- and I can never fully focus on any one pattern for long, with at points possible shifts/ thin backs occurring- but this could well be a sonic illusion.
Finally, we have (surprise, surprise) "Untitled 3"- this is the longer of the three tracks at the eleven-minute and twenty-one mark. Initially, this track seems slightly narrower/ less dense in its feel- as the track largely seems to be concerning a line spiting ‘n’ spattering static, and cluttering rips. To start with it almost feels like it suddenly thins back & stop- but it doesn’t but instead nicely pulls itself along. Maybe not quite the level/ detail of textures here as the other track- but I still enjoy what we have here.
Ventilation Cycle presents us with an engaging selection of ‘walls’ with a rewarding selection of textures. The first two tracks certainly stood out most to me, but the last ones were none too shabby either. Roger Batty
