Jan Martin Smørdal.& Øystein Wyller Odde - Kraftbalanse [Sofa Music - 2022]Kraftbalanse takes in two around eighteen-minute compositions for string and piano- which translate the hum of mains electricity into droning ‘n’ pressing sonic forms. The CD release appears of the ever reliable & always interesting output bound Sofa Music. The release brings together Norwegian composer Jan Martin Smørdal, and artists Øystein Wyller Odden. The two compositions utilize piano, alternating current and strings- both pieces are decidedly pressing & constantly hovering in their drone presence, though each has subtle different feels to them. Giving the album a rather Yin‘n’Yang vibe. The CD comes presented in a dark green-to-black coloured six-panel digipack. Inside we get a picture of the nine piece that played on both compositions, as well as a short write-up about the compositions, their concepts, etc. We open with “17:40:15 - 18:02:15 GMT +02:00 DST, 2019.06.01” and here the drone is seemingly growing on itself in incremental steps- but in reality, I think this is very much of a set/ focused series of tones. The track feels very pressing & constantly amping up in its attack- bringing to mind very much an electricity grid that seems to be growing in wattage as in circles around & around. The second/ final track is “18:29:05 - 18:51:22 GMT +02:00 DST, 2019.06.01”. And once again we get a very pressing drone composition- but this time around it feels almost regal & glowing in its intent. There is once again a feeling of ramping up & up- but it’s less vice-like in its attack- rather swooning & soothing instead of powering up/ pressing on you. Kraftbalanse presents us with two subtly different, but equally engaging takes on drone craft. Another most worthy release from Sofa Music- with a neat concept behind it.
