Whore's Breath - Ambient And Drone Noise Wall Excursions [arrhythNia Records - 2023]Here’s a three-track digital release from Cincinnati, Ohio Whore’s Breath. And really it does pretty much what its title indicates- with each track lasting just over the twelve-minute mark, and each focusing in on a selection of wall textures. The release appears on New York's arrhythNia Records. Cover artwork wise we get a murky monochrome picture of a graffiti-dabbed city street. The release can be heard/ downloaded here.
We open with “Untitled A” here we find a blend of constantly rolling mid-ranged wavering drone and a slightly higher pitch billow- that is decidedly rattle bound. I’m getting a rather underground tube train meets bubbling deep sea water rush with this track. Both elements are simplistic but effective, and they are blended together in a fairly even & compelling manner.
Next, we have “Untitled B”. Here we get a more subterranean billow meeting a tense droning tone. Here I’m getting a blend of murky underground unease, and scorching flame tone. I like the way the billowing element pulls you in, and the scorching tone adds slight tension & tautness to proceedings. At points, the elements seem to switch between the front & the back of the sound picture- but in reality, I believe the whole thing is very much set.
Finally, we have “Untitled C”- which is the most paired back/ sparse of the three tracks here. We find a light, thin and rushing low end- which is edged by tiny cluttering and jittering static detail. The whole thing has a very organic vibe to it- and I’m picturing microscopic images of water rushing through plant stems. All rather bringing to mind the work of classic ANW project Lungwash
Ambient and Drone Noise Wall Excursions takes in three rewarding ‘walls’- with each offering its own charms and enchantment. Roger Batty
