Magda - Jane Russell #1: The Outlaw [Self release - 2023]Here’s a just over nineteen-minute example of the walled noise form based around western/drama The Outlaw(1948)- the first film starring busty starlet Jane Russell. Magda is a wall-noise project from New Jersey- it seemingly started in April of this year, with all of its releases based around ’40s/ 50’s female glamour ‘n’ perversion. This is a digital affair- which appears as a self-release from the project itself. Cover artwork wise we get a film still of Ms Russell with a knife in her hand standing over a sleeping man. The release can be found here.
The tracks entitled “The Outlaw”, and it begins with a dialogue sample of a woman talking about something bee able to smell blood. Then we’re into ‘wall’- this is a blend of churning-yet-muddy low end, which is topped with a blunt battering tone. Together these create a fairly simplistic, but effective brutalizing take on the wall form. The whole thing has a nice raw & crude feeling to its unrelenting attack, which rather brought to mind may be a dryer-more-blunt take on the kind of thing Dead Body Collection used to do.
So while Jane Russell #1: The Outlaw won’t impress with either its inventiveness, detailed layering, or rewarding pattern detail. If your looking for no-nonsense walled noise making you’ll enjoy what you find here. And I look forward to hearing what Magda does next, as it’s always great to see new acts appearing on the scene.
