Worship - Artistry [HNW Netlabel - 2023]Artistry is a new two-track release from the mysterious, prolific, and often creative walled noise project. It’s a digital download album on UK’s HNW Netlabel- with one track coming in at the thirty-five-minute mark, and the other at just over the twenty-minute mark. As with all of Worship’s releases cover art wise we get a photo of the female form- this time it’s a nude red-haired woman leaning against a flower wallpapered wall, with one hand clutching her dark red main of hair. The release can be found just here
So first up we have the track “Multiple Tingles”, and this is the longer of the two tracks here at the thirty-five-minute mark. The ‘wall’ is a slowly building in-depth & intense affair- moving from its slight billow drone & light grit rattling begins. To its thick buffeting roast meets juddering static swirls and slices resolve. For the first twenty or so minutes it’s relatively paired back, but then we suddenly hit in with rolling ‘n’ crushing intensity- with some nice subtone detail being made out with repeated play-throughs.
Lastly, we have the track “Light Touches” which comes in at the 20.25 mark. It begins with a more reduced blend of slightly uneven buffeting meets thinner wind-like battering. At around the sixth minute, we get this deep rolling, slightly rattling-edged tone appearing- which sounds rather akin to slow-shifting earth plates. And as we progress this element seems to be nicely spread & pulled- as we get these rather eerier almost aquatic-like knocks & low-key rumbles drifting on top.
Artistry features two progressing & developing examples of the wall noise form. With Worship once again shows a talent for subtle creativity within the boundaries of the genre. It’s great to see the project spreading its wings beyond its normal self-released output, and I hope this continues more as more people need to hear this project's work. Roger Batty
