Jagath - Svapna [Cold Spring - 2022]" /> |
One of the more evocative forms of dark ambient gives the listener a first-person perspective into an esoteric ritual. Whether real or imagined, this powerful approach is keenly utilized by Russia's Jagath on their latest, Svapna. After performing a ritual in an abandoned Soviet-era swamp drain, Jagath captured this energy with their brand of ritualistic industrial/ambient. Svapna ("dream" in Sanskrit) highlights the dreamlike "inside-out world" achieved through this ritual, along with a few other feelings and emotions that manifested during the process. Spread over four drifting, dreamlike tracks, Svapna approaches the ritualistic industrial/ambient more from the latter half, instead of focusing the sound on the ritual performed, the focus is more on the result or information gained. Avoiding the pounding, tribal drums that usually accompany ritual-type music, Jagath instead allows the listener to gain access to the benefits these subterranean rites procured. Cold and ancient in vibe, Jagath eschew the modern ritual trappings to embrace that of a time before writing, before external influence, and before rigid order became the mode of worship. This leads to a sound that spreads forth across all tracks, interweaving when necessary, but making its own mark as it sees fit. Flutes like wind help bring the listener through this dreamworld, rife with mist, and many unknown happenings outside of one's periphery. Far more dreamy than ritual, one can definitely see what Jagath's main mission with Svapna. exposing the world to the "inside-out" that their ritual has brought about. Hearkening back to a more connected, spiritual time, Jagath's indigenous instrumentation and ritual break down the more modern approach and put the freedom and power back into the participant/listener. Capturing this essence, entering this inside-out dreamworld is easy and the listener would be advised to take full advantage of their time with Svapna.
Crossing through a portal into another world, Jagath deliver their ritual to the world with Svapna. Giving listeners an evocative and engaging look at their dark ambient world, this release on Cold Spring perfectly captures a time long forgotten, but still stitched into the fibers of our being. On one hand feeling bleak, but on the other feeling hopeful, the dream state is realized and the ritual is further elucidated. Paul Casey
