Honcho - For The Macho Man [Its Wall Noise - 2023]Honcho is a new dense drone-meets-wall noise project from US noise-making couple Richard Ramirez and Sean E. Ramirez-Matzus. It takes its name/ theme from Honcho magazine- a gay skin mag, which wanted to have the same impact as Playboy with its homosexual readership. The publication ran between the 1970s and early 2000s. For The Macho Man is the project's debut release- which appears on the recently launched label It’s Wall Noise- which is run/ curated by Sean and Scott Kindberg( of project She Walks Crooked & of label Petite Soles). The release comes as either a physical C32- in a handmade black wax brick( ltd to ten copies), or as a digital copy- I reviewed the latter of these two formats. Cover artwork wise we get a reproduction of the cover artwork for a 1981 edition of the mag, which sees two hairy-chested men lying together. There are still copies of the physical release of this left.
The single track featured here comes in at the 32.27-minute mark. It’s built around a persistent & decidedly murky-to-muffled low-end, which remains both bluntly choppy and slightly- industrial in its feel/ attack. This lead element is surrounded by the following subtones- a mid-ranged rattle, slight baying tonality, and a faint grating fan jitter- which appears from time to time. The whole wall is very encasing, and almost sleazily comfy in its intent. With one's focus remaining firm & fixed, due to the engaging lead tone, and the subtly shifting subtones.
It's certainly great to see a new wall noise label up and running, and if this release is any indication of the quality we can expect from the It’s Wall Noise- it’s certainly going the label to keep an eye on. To find out more, and buy direct drop by here. Roger Batty
