Adrián Demoè - Paino [Elsewhere Music - 2024]Paino collects together three solo piano works by Slovak composer Adrián Demoè- all played with wonderful clarity and depth by Czech pianist Miroslav Beinhauer. The three pieces featured on the CD date from between the late 2010’s and early 2020’s. Having runtimes between just over ten and just over twenty minutes each. There is decent variation between the flow and mood of each of the tracks, all making this a rewarding solo piano collection.
We move from the plodding & rising climbs of the first track “A Luca Marenzio II”- which manages to feel both spacious and intimate at the same time, with some nice hints of flitting melody.
“Ma fin est mon commencement” is all about darting to declining note stabs and tolling reaches, which at points are edged with moments of grace and harmony. Then, finally, we have “Gebrechlichkeit” with its sparse & moodily spaced notation patterns- which sit between disquiet and unease.
I was aware of Mr Demoè's orchestral and ensemble-based work, but until now hadn’t heard any of his solo piano compositions. And I must say I was impressed by what's on offer here, and look forward to hearing more of his piano-based work in the future. Roger Batty
