Worship - Expectation [Stemms Audio - 2023]

Expectation is a recent two-track release from the wholly anonymous & highly talented walled noise project Worship. The two tracks featured run between the twenty and twenty-six-minute mark, and both are decidedly creative takes on this most extreme of sound forms.

The digital release appears on Cincinnati, Ohio Stemms Audio- which is run by David Hilshorst, whose behind the HNW project Whore's Breath. As with all of Worship’s releases, cover artwork wise we get a picture of a nude female subject- she’s brunette/ blond, crouched under a wooden ladder, looking slightly down in a judgmental manner, covering her gentiles with her hands. The release can be found here

First up we have “Touch Me Forever”- this clocks in at dead on the twenty-minute mark, and is the shorter of the two tracks featured. The ‘wall’ is constructed around a dense -yet-busy blend of several rapid -if at points static ribbed ratting cane-type tones- these are underfed by a rushing undersea-like billow, with the whole thing presented in a decidedly muffled manner. Through the whole ‘wall’ one is constantly trying to fully lock on to individual texture patterns, but just as you feel you are getting near the muffled & haze production diverts your concentration once again. Add to this we keep getting what seems like dips & thinning in both the pace & depth of the ‘wall’, though in reality, these are mainly just sonic illusions. It’s a clever, if at times slightly mentally frustrating ‘wall’ that really rewards more focused listening.

Secondly, we have “Intense Sexual Pleasure”- which comes in at the twenty-six minutes & forty-nine seconds mark. Where the first track was decidedly hazed & manic- this ‘wall’ feels slightly more focused & pressing. Though we do once again have water-like texture as part of the tracks makeup. So it’s built around a rapid water bubbling air filter, which is underfed by a fixed purring cable like drone. The whole thing has a pressurized drilling quality to it, as if you are hearing field recordings of an undersea set brain-washing machine. Though as it goes on it seemingly narrows down somewhat, with the bumbling tendencies

So,  Expectation is another rewarding two-track release from Worship, with both tracks highlighting the project's talent for trying something different. Oh, and it’s interesting to see more openly sexual track titles being used- for the first time in Worship's releases
