Mlehst - Resonances And Observance [Karo Productions. - 2022]Resonances And Observance is a five-track CD album that focuses on the more surreal, at times jarringly episodic, to the cryptical ambient side of Mlehst- aka UK noisemaker/ electro experimentalist All Brentnall. The release is one of three Mlehst CDs put out in the last quarter of last year by Sweden’s Karo Productions. With the monochrome artwork of a rather brooding-looking man, fishhooks, and creepy metal shapes presented in a clear jewel case.
The five tracks featured here have runtimes between the three and twenty-plus minute mark- though most of them hit around/ over the ten-minute mark. Each of the tracks is built around a blend of uneasy drone ebb ‘n’ swirl, sudden & darting electro/ light noise texturing, or blend of the two. With elements like voice textures, and general out-of-focus sonic flotsam ‘n’ jettison. There is often a feeling of dark shadowy unease present, though there is a distinctly warbling and surreally flowing feel to much of the tracks unfold too.
I guess if I were to compare it to something I’d say the more ambient shifting sound side of NWW in the late 1990s/ 2000’s, though with more of jarring and jumpy noise tones fed into the mix. Overall I felt the album was just ok, but that is coming from someone who rather got bored/ jaded with NWW had to offer ten or so years back.
I normally enjoy what Mlehst has to offer, but I’m afraid for the most part Resonances And Observance didn’t do much for me- rather feeling like sound wallpaper, yes it’s dabbed with the quirky, surreal and jarring elements- but sadly most of it was lost on me. Roger Batty
