Use Blunt Object To Open - Seek [Basement Corner Emission - 2022]Use Blunt Object To Open is a new project from Cincinnati-based David Hilshorst- of wall-noise project Whore's Breath, and label Stemms Audio. Seemingly Seek is the project's first release- and what we get are three slabs of gruelling ‘n’ grey industrialized walled noise, which flirts between HNW and ANW- with moments of just industrial noise making. The release is a digital download album, which appears on Portland, Oregon-based Basement Corner Emissions. Cover artwork wise we have a monochrome picture of what looks like either a hole dug in earth, or some form of layered/ grimy textures- so either way, most fitting for the sonics within. The release can be found just here. We open with the eighteen minutes of “Raw”- here we find a rapid ‘n’ raw billowing roll, which is topped with a slightly squealing wheel-like spin/ judder. As the track progresses the billow tone becomes thick and more pressing, with the wheel texture becoming more compressed/ spindling fractured in its feel. It all feels like being slowly but surely fed thrown a huge, antiquated roller, and getting little by little squashed. Next, we have “Ignorance Is Bliss”- this fifteen-minute track begins with two bowing ‘n’ baying industrialized noise tones moving along side each other. By the two-minute mark we slipped into a ‘wall’ blend of mid-range baying noise drone, and slightly skitter ‘n’ slicing lock static grain hack. The track mostly remains fairly fixed in this second setting, through towards the end of proceeds we get a few shorting on ‘n’ off textures. Lastly, we have the spot on twelve minutes of “Misinformation”- here we open with a constantly flowing industrial tipped ANW, with a blend of wide billowing drone, this has going through it this sort of spin ‘n’ knock tone repetition. By the fifth minute, the billow has become thicker and slightly murky in its reveb-edged feel, with the knock ‘n’ spin at points becoming more defined. Seek is a nicely raw ‘n’ roasting example of the industrial-focused walled noise sound- with each of the three tracks, both working well individually and as a whole hour around thirty-five-minute album. I do hope there will be more Use A Blunt Object releases down the line, as this is a promising open release which does offering something different from Mr Hilshorst Roger Batty
