Svarte Greiner - Knive [Type - 2006]If you take sinister and doomy classical string work, lichen-covered guitar loops ,glichty electronics with a clearly organic feel, creepy siren and darkly operatic females vocals, plus big potions of dread and more dread - put it in a big black cauldron covered with demon effigy’s and bubble up for a bit- you’ll come up with the shudder inducing , creaking gate haunted house, and misty wood soundtrack that is Knive. By all accounts Svarte Greiner project is born and breed in Norway, and at moments it does more they nod towards there fellow countryman Ulver’s more recent string sampled composition, but were some of Ulvers attempts at this have often be a little to synthetic and studio bond. Svarte Greiner seem to have added more depth and atmosphere, literal letting the composition fly like ravens deep into dank dread filled snow heavy pine forest. He adds in all manor of horror effects, to build the atmosphere- Like raven call, creaking floor boards etc. Often it comes across a little tongue in cheek and a bit over the top in its intent, but really that makes it the more enjoyable. One of the stand out moments is the Black Dress with its looped vinyl crackle and building melancholy organ ripples and vibe pitter patter, along with all sorts of dread inducing sounds. It feels like one is moving slowly under decaying grand stone arches- diffting almost dream like though the damp Crypt atmosphere. And in front of you slow dances a woman in a lacy black dress, almost seemly in slow monition. But as you move closer you realizing it was all an illusion, the women is quite dead – a petrified copse with shrunk away skin- but she still wears a black lacy dress. Really a very enjoyable dread and sometimes fun-filled trip into horror filled soundscapes. Primed perfectly for late night vigil's, after horror film relaxation, or soundtrack to read horror novels to. Roger Batty
