Whore's Breath - Avalanche [Gates Of Hypnos - 2022]Avalanche is a recent two-track affair from Cincinnati-based wall noise project Whore’s Breath. Featured here are two twenty-minute examples of the HNW form- both are taut 'n' battering baying in their tense/ greyly unrelating attack. This digital release appears on Poland’s Gates Of Hypnos- who are really one of the main go-to labels for walled noise, though they do also release work from other noise genres too. The releases cover artwork is a rather simple, but effective enough affair- it features what’s either a hazed/ blurred narrowing tunnel from the side, or shadows. The release can be found just over here.
Each of the tracks here hit dead on the twenty-minute mark- and first up we have “Missing”. Here we find a rapid and airless mixture of a rattling slightly bucking static rush, ill-defined/rumbling bound droning, with subtle traces of greyly numbing industrial throb, and smaller skitter tone weaves. The whole thing feels both brutal, yet stale and pale in its attack- and feels akin to watching bone-white flesh forms slamming, bucking, and twitching into each other as sour sweat drips and pools, blending with hints of iron-tainted redness.
The other track here is “Searching-Wanting”. This ‘wall’ is constructed around a thick ‘n’ urgent bass bound worming- this is edged by a rabid mid-ranged static judder and clutter hacks. This track feels akin to being fed through at speed into an ageing industrial roller system, which slowly but surely grinding into itself, as well as the tiled floor beneath it too.
While Avalanche may not be breaking any genre tropes, or presenting us with a fresh/ distinctive take on the walled noise form. This is a consistently entrancing release, which will appeal to those looking for intensely baying and greyly grinding HNW. Roger Batty
