Whores Breath - 500lbs Down the Stairs [Imploding Sounds - 2022]

500lbs Down the Stairs is the walled noise form at its most bitterly droning and grimly hazed. This is a recent short digital release from Cincinnati Whore’s Breath, which appears on Seattle’s Imploding Sounds.

The murky and grey cover artwork is rather difficult to make out, but it looks like either an inverted and blurred picture of a staircase, or a hazed picture of a large hole in a wall. And I guess this adds a touch of shadowy unease to the proceedings. It can be found just here

The release features just a single self-titled track, which slides in at the twenty-one-minute mark. The ‘wall’ is a fairly simplistic mixture of billowing roaming drone, skittering and rushing static grain, and muffled buffeting & battering subtones. Together these elements create a  ‘wall’ that has elements of troubling numbness and monolithic rush- which is both greyly battering & starkly raging. As the track progresses it’s seemingly becoming more bluntly churning in its attack- but I think in reality it’s a relatively set & focused example of the walled form throughout.

If you’re in the market for a quick hit of rushing and hope battering sonic numbness, then 500lbs Down the Stairs will certainly do the trick. Though those looking for more nuanced, and detailed ‘walls’ will want to look elsewhere. Another consistent enough release from Whore’s Breath.
