Human Malice - Derealisation [HNW Netlabel - 2021]Derealisation is a half-an-hour shot of gruellingly grinding walled noise, from this London project who is seemingly more known for its work in the PE side of things. The release appears on HNW Netlable- which is one of the longest-running and respected labels in the scene. The cover artwork for the release is just a simple drawing of a praying skeleton, and this works well for the barren-if-blown out wall making within. The use of skeleton/ bones on the cover is rather sonically apt too- as I do find this ‘wall’ suggests bones, or similar matter been fed through a huge industrial grinding machine. At the base of the ‘wall’ we find a locked down revving ‘n’ rolling machine tone- this is surrounded by skipping and skittering static type grain, which very much bring to mind splintered bone jaggedly been pushed out of the end of a grinder. At points, I’m hearing more tumbling and dragging subtones coming into play- as if the tail end of the machine is get burred and cluttered up. The whole ‘wall’ nicely keeps one focused throughout its runtime, and I’d say it perfectly fits its length- as if it had gone too much longer I feel my concentration may have waned somewhat.
I do hope this isn’t Human Malice’s one and only foray into wall-making, as what’s on offer on Derealisation is a rewarding example of mid-length HNW- with a nice selection of textures that really trigged my imagination too. Roger Batty
