Yasuyuki Uesugi - Forgotten Being [Small Worm - 2021]Forgotten Being is a noise release that sees two different takes on the same material. Firstly, we have the constantly swirling and spacy feel of the original track, then the more junk-to-water-bound walled noise feel of the second version. This release appeared in late April of this year on London based Small Worm- a label that prides itself on releasing some of the more interesting/ difficult to bracket noise releases. The release appeared as either a C62 tape or digital download. The tape is ltd to just ten copies, and if you are quick you maybe be able to pick up a copy from the label. Like all of Small Worm’s releases, the plain white shelled cassette comes presented in an individual hand-drawn cover- this features an eye motif- on the copy we were sent it’s like a blacked weave on tentacles come out of the eye. With a handwritten spine and back. So, if you’d like to score a copy head here.
Yasuyuki Uesugi is a Japanese noisemaker who over the last year been getting a name with-in the walled noise with his project Psychiatrist- which has so far this year has released nearing twenty releases. And the second re-tooled track is by Earworm aka James Shearman, who runs the label, and is a respected figure in the UK noise scene. So first up we have the original/ untreated track created by Uesugi- and here find a selection of constantly swirling 'n' whipping electro textures blended together to create a constantly sucking vortex of sound. There’s a swaying and swooping mid, a feasting phaser like tone, and a muffled billowing electro tone- together these create a rather coldly swirling track. Flipping over and we of course have Shearman’s re-take on the track. First, he removes the space-bound feel to the track, dipping in a more blunt and murky watery setting. He also adds in mid-to-high pitched junk slices and grates. So instead of being in out of space in a laser lined vortex of the first side, we’re in the dark waters of a seaside set junkyard, where serrated steel slide and slip, and rusty hulls knock. As the track progresses, we get both more aquatic bubbling subtones and building layers of subtle- yet serrated junk sear. Once again Forgotten Being is another worthy and original noise release from Small worms, and I suggest you check it out- along with nearing sixty titles the label has put out thus far. Roger Batty
