Jotunspor - Gleipnirs Smeder [Satanas Rex - 2006]With Goatvarg self titled released early this year, Uk dark ambient, noise, etc label Cold spring, dipped their toe in black metal waters. With the launch of a new sublable Satanas Rex they getting fully into black metal waters, formed purely as a black metal label, Gleipnirs Smeder is its first withered black fruit. But Gleipnirs Smeder is certainly not pure black metal; there are military industrial elements, along with dark ambient edges. The second track Svartalvheims Djup takes us through 7 minutes of eerier creacking, and drippings, whispered voices, black ocultic atterings, to create a creepy dark ritual air. So what of the Black metal elements I hear you cry, well for the most part it’s fairly standard mid pace riffing. With some nice cold discordant guitar work, and some interesting rhythmic elements. Vocals vary from a standard black metal growl, to more melodic and heroic singing. An Enjoyable enough release, that conjures up a nice grim war torn atmosphere, nothing particular new or different, but competent enough. Be interesting to see what next falls from Satanas Rex blacken branches. Roger Batty
