Slit Throats - Joshi Noise Worship: Women's Most Violent [Phage Tapes - 2020]

Joshi Noise Worship: Women's Most Violent severs up two sonically gruelling CD-sized slices of brutal Japanese female wrestling focused harsh noise. This is noise at its most taut, constricting, and brutalizing-making the release much like the sonic equivalent of having two rounds with a skilled and sadistic female fighter. By the end, you're left with a throbbing head & ringing ears, but also you feel oddly high & vaguely buzzing from the attack.

The release appears on respected noise label Phage Tapes- with the two CD’s coming in a six-panel digipak- this features a selection of black & white TV screen taken shots of brutal female matches. With the set comes is an eight-page monochrome booklet- this takes in a two-page write-up about the releases themes, and more crude 'n' grainy fight footage. The release is Ltd to 200 copies.

Slit Throats  is one of the projects of Cleveland, OH. Noisemaker Roman J Leyva- who has been active in noise since around 2009- with projects such as Plague Mother, Arsonist's Prayer, and Mailbomb Solution. He also previously ran the Atavistic Transformations label- currently runs the Compulsion Rites and Cadre labels. As well as being the host of Harsh Truths Podcast.
Slit Throats has been active since 2019- with around thirteen releases to its name thus far. With releases themes going from other forms of brutal wrestling, monster trucks & water-bound oriental death. This is personally my first taste of the projects work, so I can’t say how it sonically compares to its other work.

The first CD kicks off with the wonderfully named “Barbwire Death Match”, and this nearing twenty-one-minute track certainly lives up to its brutal title. It’s a searing & sonic nervy slicing blend of taut hacking ‘n’ juddering mids and cluttering  ‘n’’ smarting sears- with occasional lines of high-end sweep & drag added so often. It’s a great & intense start to proceedings- showing Leyva going straight in for the attack. As we move through disc one we come to “Electofied & Exploding Barbwire Rope Match II”- here we find just short of nineteen minutes worth of cluttering static jitters, forking & baying sound pinches, and hazed sear. The first disc is finished off with the eight-minute & twenty seconds of “Slice With The Sickle No Rules”- this is mixture of taut & hazed constant static descend, which is edged by rattling/ thinner static grain- with the occasion soured & Sharpe high-end smears. In all this first disc takes in seventy-four minutes of noise.

Moving onto disc two and we get another seventy three minute attack. We go from the sparking and texturally grinding attack of “Chain And Weapons”- a fourteen-minute track that nicely brings together smaller grained texturing, with smarting sways of mid-to-high-end sear. Moving onto the nearing nine and half minute  intense high pitched twists meets cluttering crunch of “Barbed Wire Cage Death Match”. With the CD  been finished with the nearing thirteen minutes of “No Rules Street Fight With Sickle” and here we move from rapidly skittering 'n' slicing static banks that are smarted by high-end twists, onto reduced-to-condensed cluttering & forking.

Joshi Noise Worship: Women's Most Violent is certainly not for those just dipping their toe in the harsh noise form, or those new to the form. This is for your seasoned noise fan, who revels in lengthy dwells in sear, grind & sweeping noise matter.
