James Shearman - At The Bottom Of A Deep Hole [Harsh Noise London - 2020]Here’s a sixty-five-minute example of long-form wall-craft from respected London noise maker James Shearman. The release was recently released in the form of a CDR, which appeared on the Harsh Noise London label- presented in a DVD case with warped & glitched out pictures from London. If you even have a passing interest in Euro wall-making, you’ll be aware of Mr Shearman- for a more than a few years he’s been putting out walled noise/ static texturing under A Raja's Mesh banner as well as his own name. He runs the prolific & respected HNW Net label, and has been involved with the organization of wall/ noise shows in and around London over the years.
The single self-titled track slides in at dead on the sixty-five-minute mark. After to a sudden wince-inducing high pitch noise tone blend ‘n’ burn- we drop into the tracks main textures- these are a blend of blunt ‘n’ sluggishly bass hover, and constantly rattling ‘n’ hacking texturing. Personally, I’m not getting the vibe of been in the bottom of a hole with this track- to me it brings to mind marching through field in a buffeting & baying autumn as ten or twenty metal chairs are been thrown around you. The textures selected are fairly original, rewarding & entrancing in their feel- and the whole windswept vibe is most effective, with towards the end of proceedings we get some great sub-bass meets more manic chalky thinner cluttering coming into play.
At The Bottom Of A Deep Hole is another worthy example of long-form walled noise from Mr Shearman. This release had a pressing of ten copies, so I’m you’ll still be able to hook up a copy of this…and if you enjoy creative-yet-brutal long-form wall you’ll be wanting to do so. Roger Batty
