Hostage Pageant/The Cherry Point/Kazuma - Split [Cipher Productions - 2019]

Now here’s a rarity- an effectively balanced, varied, and consistent three-way Harsh Noise split. This CD release appeared late last year on long-running Australian noise & experimental label Cipher Productions- it comes in a relatively large edition of 200 copies, so all been well you should still be able to score a copy of this CD.

By noise standards the release is pro looking/ well presented- with the CD coming in a flipside plastic case, this takes in moody photos of power lines & water reflecting on rusted steel- so a nicely presented release.

In all the CD takes in fifty-three minutes of sound- with the material fairly even split between the three contributors. First up we have three tracks from Hostage Pageant- this the project of Virginia based Shane Church- it’s been active since 2010, putting out nearing fifty releases. Their tracks kick off with the near five & half minutes of "Depletion"- here we find a nicely bucking ‘n’ shifting mix of mid-ranged feasting static, repetitive cable buzz, and forking-to-seared junk bays ‘n’ electro rips. Next, we have the seven minutes of “Falling Out Of Place”- this starts off with a blend of pared-back paddling static trudging & thicker rip based sustained, we stop for a field recording of a dog slurping- and this gets slow but surely morphed & blended with creaking tones. Before we kick-back into the noise with a mixture of baying, rushing & cluttering noise matter- this stands as one of my stand out moments of the split, as it’s nicely unpredictable- moving between nasty-yet-moorish noise-making & slight surreal sound manipulation. Lastly from this project we have “Enabler”- this is the longer of the first three tracks, rolling in just over eight minutes- it starts with a bowling & bashing semi- rhythmic metallic tone, then we move into a tight & twisting mesh juddering mids, fizzing grain sweep, and splitting highs. As the track progresses it alternates between more semi rhythmic & brooding noise paired back-ness, and denser/tighter sways of jittering, feasting & serrated rushing noise matter.  ,

Next, we have a track from US noise legend The Cherry Point, who creates dense yet atmospherical chilling & horror fed noise matter- the projects all the work of LA-based Phil Blankenship, who also runs the respected noise label Troniks. The Cherry Point project was largely active between the years 2004 to 2006, in recent years we’ve seen bits & bobs of unreleased/ unearthed material- but as far as I’m aware it hasn’t put out any new stuff in a time. The just over nineteen-minute track we have here is entitled “Just Before Dawn”- and I’m guessing it’s themed around the 80’s backwoods lasher of the same name- as Blankenship often themed his work on horror pics….and as far as I can gather this is an unreleased track too.  The is track is very thick & hazed in its feel, and you can see why some quote The Cherry Point’s work as an influence on the walled noise scene- but what we have here is not ‘walled’ noise, instead it’s droning & murky harsh noise. The track is built around shifting & sliding layers of noise matter, which create a wonderfully malevolent like noise haze- in it, we find the following: eerie buzzing & sinisterly humming drones, sludgy hacks & bays of textured noise, sweeps on mid-to-high tone creepy sears, and slurred-to-purring undercarriages of post-industrial ambience. The project has a very distinctive & one-off sound, and you know from the off your listening to The Cherry Point- the track here is a classic example of the projects dense-yet- horrifyingly moody take on noise-making, and I’d say this track is central jewel in this very consistent split.

Next, we have Japanese post-noise projet Kazuma Kubota, this has been active since 2008-put out around eighteen releases- and as far as I’m aware this is my first taster of the project work, and I must say I was extremely impressed- as the track here is varied & cleverly composed mixture of noise-bound  junk manipulation, Laser seared noise & electro texturing, and ambience. The nearing fourteen & a half minute track is entitled "Zattou Ni Tokete", and it most certainly a nicely shifting composition, that’s both rewarding & surprising in it’s unfold. We go from quirky churning & knocking junk detail that’s edged with electro buzzes & noise grain shifts, onto forking & laser slicing piles-up of harsh noise matter, through to rising harmonic & goldern drifts of ambient, onto a blend of moody textural grain that lanching in searing showers of clutter electro noise matter & jarring sound cuts. There really is a lot of shift & give within the track, yet it always feels well composed in it's unfold. As I said early on I was very impressed/ taken by this track, and I’ll most certainly be tracking down some more of Kazuma Kubota work.

So, in conclusion, this is one of the finest noise split in recent memory, and I’d say pretty much what ever you enjoy in the way of noise sub-genres, you’ll find this release both highly worthy & enjoyable. If you like to pick up a copy of this CD head over to here to get your hands on one.
