Rien & Zachary Ledsinger - Split [Marbre Negre - 2019]From late spring last year here we a two way split that severs up two wonderful taut & sly creative examples of textured noise texturing- we have Stockholm based Rien, and USA’s Zachary Ledsinger. The release appeared on Spanish noise label Marbre Negre- coming as either a C20 or digital download. The plan black shelled tape is presented in a double sided/ pro printed monochrome sleeve- this features a murky & darkly contasting photo, simple white texts on a black backdrop, and on it’s reverse just black. This tape came in a edition of eight copies, and amazingly the label still has some left- so if you’re a collector of all things textured noise focused I’d say this is well worth picking up, as it's one of the better examples of heard of the genre in recent months.
Each artists offers up a single untitled track- so first up we have Stockholm's Rien- this is one of the projects Johan Strömvalll Hammarstedt- of projects Gamiani, J.S.H., J S H, and runner of the excellent Swedish tape label Ominous Recordings. The projects started late 2016 and have so far released coming on for thirty releases- taking in stand-alone releases, as well as splits with the likes of Vomir, Werewolf Jerusalem, and Dosis Letalis. The track here really sees Hammarstedt in fine, focused and detailed form with tight-yet pared back example of static texturing. The piece is built around a circulating shape of pop ‘n’ snap, low end feasting hiss, and a off pattern rub/ bash. Together these elements create a track that’s both enchanting, wonderful nuanced, and masterful- towards the middle & the end the textures do seem to either slow, or build up, but I think the reality is this is it’s very much fixed. I really enjoy the mix of stark gas chamber hiss, and pin pricking yet circular static- this project output just seems to keep getting better and better.
Moving on the second side , and we of course have Zachary Ledsinger- of projects N0123Noise & Standmaster, whose been actively creatively active in the noise world scene since 2014. With this untitled track we find an extremely crude & bluntly ripping ‘n’ tumbling low end, around this we have a selection of knocking, hammer, and cluttering sub tones, which are formed into a tunnel like mass. Ever so often we get this sudden slicing/ darting sudtones- which nicely adds an extra edge of surprise/ tension to the whole thing. This track is a bit more pared back from the work I’d heard Mr Ledsingers other projects, and I do hope he continues down this path with his solo work, as I was most impressed by this track.
In finishing this is a great little split- featuring two very well tooled & involving examples of taut & subtle detailed static texturing from this pair. If you want to hear a sample of the track or buy direct here. Roger Batty
