Unsignified Death - Aesthetic Representation of the Grotesque Body [Void Singularity Recordings - 2019]

Here we have a bucking, sputtering and nastily twisting take on the walled noise form from Thailand based project Unsignified Death. The CDR/ digital release presents us with a single slab of manic ‘n’ muddled textured noise, and I must say it’s one hell of an appealing ride- if you in the mood for nastily snaking ‘n’ sliding wall craft.

The release appears of northern English label Void Singularity Recordings- with the CDR coming in jewel case packing- this features monochrome pictures of bending anorexic bodies and a lengthy quote about the definition of what beauty is. The physical version of this release came in an edition of fifteen copies, and I must say the simplistic-yet- effectively disturbing artwork both fits the release concept & crudely bucking wall very well- so if you get a chance it’s well worth picking up in this form, and as of this review the label still have copies.

Unsignified Death started life in 2019, & is the project of Bangkok based Polwach Beokhaimook-of various death/grind projects, and runner of Perpetual Abjection- the ltd art edition HNW label. The venture has put out around ten or so releases, which isn’t too shabby for such a young project. I’ve heard bits & bobs of their digital releases and reviewed Poetic Catharsis/Abject Purification:….a self-released CDR from early on this year, and I must say I was pleasantly surprised by this new release- as it mangers to present the projects messy & busy sound in a rather appealing manner.

The single title track slides in at the thirty-eight-minute mark- and what we find here is a very manic, yet detailed packed 'wall' that mangers to force together a selection of ill-fitting textures in wonderful wonky-yet- entrancing manner. The ‘wall’ starts off very full & active and remains that way through-out, and by its end nearly forty minutes later you feel nicely mentally battered & buffed by the whole thing. The ‘wall’ is constructed around the following: constantly descending & crude static judder, rattling electro circling, & various snaps, pops, clicks & snaps. Together these elements are pushed together to create the sonic equivalent of one of those amassed cartoon fights where you can just see various limbs pocking out of a blurred cloud of activity. You do start to become a little dizzy & unbalanced if one tries to follow multiply patterns, and I’d say it best played if you let your mind just randomly drift around the cluttering & careering chaos of the whole thing.

I must say I was rather taken by the messily manic, yet texturally varied sonic attack that is Aesthetic Representation of the Grotesque Body. It shows Unsignified Death coming into its own as a project, to present a fairly distinctive & original take on the wall noise form- I certainly look forward to new works in 2020 from project, to taste the sonic chaos head here
