Monuments Are No Good To The Dead - Earth's Hum Vol V [Require Rate Of Return Records - 2018]Coming fairly soon after volumes three & four of Earth’s Hum Series, here ’s the fifth volume in the sequence of seemingly unending releases from this Michigan based wall noise project. This time we get a CDR release on Frances Require Rate Of Return Records- this takes in a single thirty-minute slice of searing-through- vaguely harmonic tinged wall matter. The CDR features a green printed label that takes in one of the projects often used imagery- a cross of foundation like shapes. The disc comes in a slimline DVD case- which featured a rather murky black, grey & green artwork. Sadly this has now sold-out with the label, but you can download the digital version at the labels bandcamp page.
The track begins with an intense, yet kind of epic blend of thick billowing low-end, which is edged by this semi-harmonic juddering tone- as the ‘wall’ progresses these two elements nicely grind and rush together to creating a feeling of seared-yet- mournful destruction. Towards the middle of the track, the more harmonic tone dulls back slightly, and we get some nice thick stretches & pulls of the billow tone- though fairly soon the judder comes back into play again. At times there’s an almost amped up bleak jam rock persistency to the tracks swirling sway & bay, and in its last few minutes, we're left with just the starkly harrowing slow sways of the billowing elements, just very lightly touched by the harmonic judder.
Earth’s Hum Vol V has a decidedly atmospheric, and densely epic feel to it’s unfold- with the semi harmonic elements adding both a moody & memorable feel to the wall. I certainly looking forward to hearing what the project will do on future vols in the series, as there certainly managed to create something fairly distinctive & appealing here. Roger Batty
