Maëror Tri - Archaic States [Zoharum - 2018]

Originally released in 1993, Maëror Tri's Archaic States is the third release in Zoharum's series of classic re-releases. While the advent of YouTube and P2P sharing has allowed fans to hear these releases without spending an arm and a leg, many fans still want physical releases, and Zoharum has come to their rescue. Limited to only 350 copies, fans of Maëror Tri should act quickly and snap up this excellent re-release.

Churning off in the darkness, far off in the cavernous depths, Archaic States slowly moves forth with ancient Earth vibes and chthonic overtones. Masters of their craft, Maëror Tri build atmosphere and tension slowly and deliberately. Like a juggernaut clawing its way from the core of the Earth to take part in a ritual, "Cruror" brings for an ancient terror. In shocking juxtaposition, "Lacus Somniorum" follows this up with a light, airy bit of freedom far removed the the grim, rolling opening. Taking a turn for the rough and somewhat noisy, "Archaic Sensations" uses a crunchy, looped "beat" to propel itself forward. Moving with an almost techno like aplomb, this track seems to veer off into different turf than most Maëror Tri material. Bell like and ethereal, "The Adminstrator 2" see the band return to more familiar ground, and much like the combination of earth and sky of the first two tracks, these make interesting companion pieces. The longest piece on the album, "Blowing Sounds from A Dome," has MT working with material recorded by Runzelstirn & Gurgelstock. Slow tape manipulation unfolds into a large, cavernous space as described by the title. Windy and large, this sonic spectacle envelops the listener and transports him or her into this whirling vortex of sound. Wrapping up Archaic States, "Solition" brings together some of the cavernous notes from the beginning, along with the bell like, airiness. Tying the album together nicely, "Solition" showcases Maëror Tri's talent at creating varied atmospheres and linking them together for a cohesive whole.

Zoharum's latest of Maëror Tri's reissues, Archaic States, offers up six well done, atmospheric pieces. Cavernous and chthonic, but still remaining lofty and airy, Maëror Tri were truly masters of their craft. And, thanks to Zoharum, these long out of print albums are now obtainable in CD form.
