Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-O-R - Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama (Blu R [Full Moon Productions - 2017]Originally released in 1988 Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama is a cheeky & campy slice of 80’s cinema- mixing together sex comedy, fantasy, and light horror elements. Here we have a blu ray edition of the film- featuring a new scan of the movie, a new commentary, and a very lengthy documentary about the film & its production. Following on from 1987’s excellent Alien/Mad Max rip-off Creepozoids, Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama was the second film that hellishly prolific exploration director David DeCoteau made with Charles Band productions. And really it’s as campy & fun as its title suggests- the film's plot follows a group sorority pledges who have to break into a closed bowling ally in the middle of the night. They are joined by a group of typical frat boys- the group plan to steal a trophy, but they inadvertently unleash a tricky & chaos causing imp.
The likable cast is headed up by two of the 1980’s B movie scream queens- Linnea Quigley & Brinke Stevens. And the film brings together a fairly bit of T&A, campy humor, a jive-talking Imp, a light but enjoyable plot, nods towards classic horror, and cult movie legend George 'Buck' Flower playing a bumbling caretaker. All trapped inside lighting locked mall, with a day-glow & buoyant soundtrack that brings together new- wave & bright synth crafting. Sure there’s barely any gore or violence present, and at times it clearly shows its ultra-low budget. But if your after a good & happy glow-making shot of 80’s b-movie nostalgia this really is the ticket.
This new blu ray release truly is the ultimate edition of the film. Firstly you get a brand new remastered print of the film from the original 35mm camera negative, so it looks as good as it ever has. Also, a new, chatty & fun commentary track featuring the films director, scream queen Brinke Stevens, and the film's writer Sergei Hasenecz. Plus a two & a quarter hour documentary entitled Tales From The Bowling Alley- this brings together recent interviews with the director, as well as a big chunk of never before seen on set interviews with the cast & crew recorded back in 1988.
The disc is region free, and all in all, it’s a really nicely put together release. Presently Full Moon Productions are having a great Halloween sale so at the time of writing you can pick this up for just $11.00!. Roger Batty
