Bahimiron - Rebel Hymns of Left Handed Terror [Moribund - 2011]

Bahimiron are a  four piece Texas black metal band who create fast, unholy and ugly yet memorable blacked metal that runs with subtle yet effective & grimly atmospheric elements. Though the band have been around since early 2000’s this is only the projects third full length release.

“Rebel Hymns of Left Handed Terror” offers up nine tracks in all, and these run between just over the two minute mark to near the nine minute mark. For the most part the  tracks here are fast, clamouring, ugly & basement grim sounding. There are a few death & blacked trash elements mixed in with the bands blacked metal attack- like  guttural death metal like vocals, & King/ Hanneman like blistering blacked solo attacks, but fear not this is more blacked metal than anything else.

Through what really helps make this album stand apart from your normal speedy, grim & blacked metal mix is that the band thrown in surprising atmospheric elements here & there often in quite a subtle yet damn effective manner. These either come in the form of a sudden yet subtle layers of prime evil drone, grim sound effects or bleak tolling elements been added to the tracks blacked metal grimness. Or the tracks will sudden dip from their blackly pelting pace into these great dark & yawn abysses of thumbed guitar/ bass drones, backwards guttural vocals, blacked chants and grim whispers. But none these moments or elements ever take away from the albums blacked guitar, bass, drums and vocals heart- they really enhance & add atmospheric depth to them.

All told “Rebel Hymns of Left Handed Terror” is a crude ‘n’ blacked collection of black metal craft that’s ebb with trash & death metal touches, as well as subtle prime evil atmospherics. So if you dig your blacked metal fast yet atmospheric this is a must have. I’ve been playing this a lot over the last few months, & I think it stands as one of my metal highlights from this year as it’s darkly crude yet often quite atmospherically sophisticated & damn replayable too.
