Small Hours - Pulse [Sweet Solitude - 2011]“Pulse” is the first release from the new ultra minimal textural noise/ambient project of uk based James Killick(of the controversial Katy Perry influenced HNW project Love Katy and owner of the great uk based HNW label Sweet Solitude). On offer here is a 3inch cdr that features a single twenty three minute track of very quiet, subtle and subdued textured noise. And when I say quiet, I really mean very, very quiet- when I first played this at a normal listening volume on headphones I thought there was an error on the disc, as the track was playing but seemingly no sound was coming out. Anyway after putting the volume up to near on max, I started to make out very slow and distant patterns of textural drag, juddering and static rub. I guess the release takes ambient to it’s ultimate extreme form, with barely heard sound quietly ebbing or sonically colouring ones listening space. I’m still rather in two minds about this release- sometimes when I’ve played it & got subtlety entranced by the slow ebb and drag of the track. Yet at other times I’ve found it too quiet and subtle for its own good, and I got feed up with it fairly quickly. So Kudos to Mr Killick for trying something different in the ultra minimal noise/ ambient HNW genre, but I’m still unsure if I like this not. Certainly worth a look if into very subtle, subdued and quiet sound scaping. Roger Batty
