Billy Crystal Meth - Meth Metal [Mortville Rec / Hear More Rec - 2008]

Concerning the name and the hand drawn cover, I was expecting some silly grindcore band.  But it's nothing really that terrible, just an instrumental thrash-metal band from Iowa.

Of course the problem with instrumental metal is that without a vocalist you might as well be listening to surf rock.    You kind of hope for a jazz riff or something different to break the monotony.  Well I can say the band is good and crunchy, although I think their ideal environment would be live in a dingy dive or a barnhouse, or whatever places they have hardcore punk or metal gigs these days.  It's mostly fodder for the kids to mosh to, in other words, so a studio recording doesn't make much sense except maybe for demo purposes...

Filling out much of this CD is some rather boring dialogue about apocalyptic themes; where exactly they got it from I wouldn't know.  It just distracts from the music in an annoying way.  However one good thing about this record is the final track "Frostillicius", which is nothing but an elongated feedback-drone, which sure beats the rest of the record...

In short, this is generic thrash.  I can't see anybody wanting this except for mosh practice.
