Morgvir - Towards The Black Horizon [Smell The Stench - 2009]

Morgvir are a one-man finish based black metal project who offer up mid-pace, ambient, lo-grade & horror licked  synth Black mettlics. ‘Towards The Black Horizon’  is the projects forth released CDR album.

The album features nine tracks in all, but it's over in just under twenty four minutes as the tracks fall between just over the minute & half minute and just over the four minute mark a piece. Musically the main element in the sound & the mix is the keyboards & electric piano elements, with the darkened talky growls next, then the guitar tone, then the drums... which sometimes sound like there were recorded in another room. The tracks are split fairly evenly between keyboard like horror filled dwells which bring to mind  more simplistic Striborg meets 80’s wavering two finger sustained horror film  scaping. And the more ‘song’ orientated  black metal tracks which blow along in a rewarding if a little haphazard & amateurish way. On the whole it’s an capable enough album, through it rather lacks enough originality to stand out from many bands that do a similar sort of thing. That said it’s does have a few odd more quirky &  marginally interesting/creative elements  that are thrown in here and there through the tracks- like  the effective doomed & coarse  80’s dark pop keyboard throbbing groove that appears on ‘Approaching light’. Or  the lo-grade yet dramatic piano march with spacey gothic synth sustain edges on which comes at the end of ‘The Black Scion’.

So if you enjoyable quite lo-grade, wavering, & keyboard heavy blackened metal that’s not too ground breaking or distinctive,  but does have the odd quirky or more creative idea here & there… then track this down.
